CDA Begs for Assistance

Monrovia- The Registrar General of the Cooperative Development Agency Regina Sokan-Teah has informed Liberians that the lack of financial support is impeding the working activities of the entity. The CDA boss asserted that additional help from the central government is required if the operation in all fifteen counties is to be successful. She appeal to President George Weah to release a policy declaration encouraging people to participate in agricultural pursuits.

Madam Regina stated that as a result of the CDA field staff’s extensive nationwide awareness campaign, the CDA management was able to convert 43 farmer-based groups into cooperative societies at their request, with a total membership of 1780 in five (5) Counties. The counties mentioned by Madam Sokan-Teah include Bong, Nimba, Lofa, Margibi, and Maryland.

“In addition, the CDA was successful in resolving a dispute between 86 members of the Gbarnway, woega electric cooperative in Salayea District, Lofa County. The cooperative provides residents of Gbarnway with solar-powered electricity.”

Registrar General Regina Sokan-Teah mentioned that CDA oversaw the leadership election of one of the oldest cooperatives in Nimba county (Dokodan Farmers Cooperative), which resulted in the appointment of a new generation of directors to manage the cooperative’s business.

The CDA boss narrated that as per the statutory mandate to audit Cooperatives once every year, the CDA has successfully conducted nine (9) Cooperative audits in both Financial and Agricultural Cooperatives. She stressed that the CDA has created 144 Jobs with an annual salary of US$ 216, 283.15 with a total asset value of US $3,444,235.36.

She notes that since the sector is nonpolitical, governments should refrain from influencing how it operates. The cooperative Development Agency, which was founded in 1936, is the organization in charge of regulating and overseeing the formation of cooperatives throughout the Republic of Liberia, according to the registrar general.

Madam Regina made the accession on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at the Ministry of Information Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT_ regular press briefing in Monrovia.
