Monrovia, Liberia – Two Nigerian citizens were arrested, detained and handed over to the Liberia National Police by the Armed Forces of Liberia’s Coast Guard for engaging in piracy ten miles outside of Liberia’s territorial seas.
At a news conference held on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, the Coast Guard officials said the Shangai ship, which was carrying six Chinese and seventeen Sierra Leoneans, was taken over by pirates.
Two of the pirates reportedly made off after exchanging gunfire with Liberian Coast Guard officials at sea.
Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence committed by attackers on a ship or boat against another ship or a coastal area, usually with the intention of taking valuable cargo and other items.
