Campaign to Stop Extreme Abortion in Liberia,  Concludes Three-day Training and Awareness

Monrovia, Liberia – The Campaign to Stop Extreme Abortion in Liberia, a pro-life organization, has concluded a three-day training and awareness program on comprehensive sex education. In Brewersville, outside of Monrovia, the organization has also started empowering local and religious community leaders on abortion education.

Bishop Kortu Brown, the former president of the Liberia Council of Churches, stated during the training ceremony that the phrase “given the rights to take the life of the unborn babies in Liberia” has to be discussed. He claimed that the language regarding abortion in the bill which is said to be in front of the Senate of Liberia needs to account for the fact that abortion is the killing of the unborn.

“This is a part of our efforts by mobilising the Liberian community in standing up against the extreme abortion component of the extreme abortion bill of the public health of Liberia that is currently under review by the Liberian Senate. This is a portion that we have tried to prevent from passing into law. The Liberian Senate is currently in limbo, and we want to raise awareness of the risks that this bill’s approval poses to our culture, particularly with regard to its section on sex education. This is not the path that our nation and people should go, thus we must spread understanding about this matter and preserve this country for God.”

In her keynote address, Dr. Monique Wubbenhorst, a former Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Global Health at the US Agency for International Development, stated that the killing of unborn children is wrong and a violation of human rights.

“Abortion and sex education in schools for children are topics of growing global attention, particularly in developing nations. I simply want to reassure you that despite the election, your efforts won’t be in vain since God is aware of what you are doing and will reward you for all that you have accomplished.”

During the inaugural event, Reverend Miatta Sirleaf, the General Secretary of Apostolic Pentecostal Church International, explained that the purpose of the programme is to prepare participants to raise awareness about the risks associated with abortion in their individual communities.

Day one of the training brought Christian leaders, day two was graced by Muslim clerics and the third day brought youths and students from all over the country.

The training and awareness under the theme: “Protecting Life and Family,” was organized by the Campaign To Stop Extreme Abortion in Liberia with funding from the Family Watch International as well as facilitated by Bishop Kortu Brown, the Convener and Lead Campaigner.

For three days, the programme brought together 150 leaders from various groups in the nation, including women, youth groups, and Christian and Muslim organisations.
