Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has welcomed the Supreme Court of Liberia’s Decision in Favor of Punch FM. The PUL welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to deny the Liberian Government’s appeal against the Civil Law Court ruling on the opening of Punch FM.
The Supreme Court in its decision in favor of Punch FM indicated that the government had no legal ground in canceling the license of the station thereby denying its appeal. The Press Union of Liberia in its release described the decision as a victory for freedom of the press in Liberia.
PUL President, Charles Coffey lauded the Supreme Court for administering true justice despite the government’s determination to thwart the law. The PUL boss called on Liberian Journalists across the country to take advantage of the law in finding remedies for injustices against them.
The release coated the Union as saying “the days of intermediating Journalists in the country are over as such, Journalists should work in a peaceful environment”.
Speaking to a team of reporters minutes after the supreme court ruling, the CEO of punch FM Patrick Honnah described the CDC Led- government’s actions as a political witch hunt that has the tendency to bring back the dark days which is not in the interest of the country and it citizens. He however Lauded the Supreme Court of Liberia for ruling in the interest of Justice; and all of his supporters for standing with him during his difficult times.
Mr. Honnah vowed to file a lawsuit against the government of Liberia for damages and cautioned the government to avoid unnecessary political marginalization. He at the same time promised that Punch FM will hit the airwaves with top-quality broadcasts soon.
It can be recorded that the government of Liberia denied Punch FM a license to operate in the country for a period of four years.
