Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) has released the provisional Census results for the recently completed 2022 Liberia National Population and Housing Census (LNHC). The 2022 National Population and Housing Census is Liberia’s first completed digital census since the foundation of the country. The reports stated that the Nation’s population figure from the 2022 census is 5.2 million; five million, two hundred and forty-eight thousand, six hundred and twenty-one (5,248,621.

The 2022 Census used state-of-the-art geospatial, Census morning dashboard, and computer Aided Personal Interview ( CAPI ) technology in all aspects of its implementation.

The Acting Director General of the Institution, Mr. Lawrence George spoke at the event and reported that approximately 16,562 Census Enumerators and Supervisors visited households across the country, counting people, and collected detailed information on nearly all people who spent the Census Night in the respective households. He said that because it was a fully digital census, it made better use of technology to increase organizational effectiveness and raise the caliber of the data gathered.

The head of LISGIS claims that the actual Census Enumeration took place from November 14, 2022, to December 20, 2022, with a mop-up operation taking place from December 27, 2022, to January 7, 2023. Males make up 50.4 percent of the total population (2,644,450) and females make up 49.6 percent (2,604,171), for a national sex ratio of 101.5 males for every 100 females.

Additionally, 1,187,388 households with an average household size of 4.4 people nationwide and a national population of 140 people per square mile were counted. Director George notes that according to the 2022 LNPHC provisional Census findings, Montserrado County accounts for 37% of the total population counted, followed by Nimba County (12%), Bong County (9%), and Lofa County (7%).

Noting that the Census was carried out in accordance with international best practices, it was promised that the government would use the findings of the Census to implement development across the nation. He expressed his appreciation to the government and people of the Republic of Ghana for their assistance in the form of 21,000 tablets and power banks, which improved the efficiency of the Enumerators’ work.
