Monrovia, Liberia – Following Liberia’s presentation of its Energy Compact at the Africa Energy Summit in Tanzania, Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), urged the World Bank and international partners to assist the Liberia’s energy ambitions.

Adesina praised President Joseph Boakai’s commitment on governance changes, emphasizing the need of stable power for economic growth. “You cannot expand the economy without energy. I urge all development partners to support Liberia’s energy ambitions,” he said.

He emphasized the 160-megawatt St. Paul River Hydropower Project, which has the potential to provide Liberia with 100% electricity. Adesina also emphasized the need of low-cost tariffs and regional connections, namely Liberia’s relationship with Côte d’Ivoire.

Adesina advocated for additional investments in rural electrification and clean cooking solutions, citing poor progress in rural energy availability.

Adesina praised President Boakai’s initiatives and highlighted the necessity of international partnership in driving Liberia’s energy transition. Liberia’s energy future relies on global partners supporting its ambitious aspirations, backed by the AfDB.
