Monrovia, Liberia – One of the two brothers involved in a prominent libel case, Al-Hussein Fadiga, was freed on bail hours after being placed under detention at the Monrovia Central Prison. Court sheriffs in Monrovia, acting on a petition from the Civil Law Court at the Sixth Judicial Circuit, detained Fadiga on Monday. The arrest was a part of continuing efforts to execute a judgment of $1.6 million that was given to Abraham Kromah, the former director of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, in a civil case against the Fadiga brothers.
The action, according to court authorities, came after many unsuccessful attempts to serve the defendants—who were held responsible in the libel suit—with judicial summonses. Kromah, who is requesting $100,000 in additional damages and $1.5 million in general damages, won the case. A court employee informed reporters, “The arrest occurred after repeated orders to appear were disregarded.” Hassan Fadiga, Fadiga’s brother and fellow defendant, is still hiding, according to the authorities.
Hassan Fadiga accused Kromah of trying to attack his brother in a Facebook post from an unidentified place shortly after Al-Hussein was arrested. Hassan claimed in the post that Ab Kromah aggressively pursued my brother in traffic and made an effort to physically and verbally attack him after failing to accomplish his goal today.
