Monrovia, Liberia – The betrayer of Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah and other CDC lawmakers who defied the party and former President George Manneh Weah to oppose Speaker J. Fonati Koffa has been denounced by the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) National Executive Committee, which is chaired by Janga Augustus Kowo.

Chairman Kowo in a statement in Monrovia on Thursday, October 31, 2024, stated that Deputy Speaker Fallah and other CDC parliamentarians’ acts are obviously influenced by Joseph Boakai’s administration and are meant to undermine the CDC.

He said the party is keeping a careful eye on the situation and that the plans would fail and the CDC will come out stronger. He stated that the developments speak to the wider threat to Liberian democracy where an overbearing executive can interfere with the function of the other two branches, thereby undermining checks and balances.

“It is evident that the UP government lacks democracy and has violated all aspects of the rule of law, as demonstrated by its disregard for Supreme Court decisions, human rights abuses, arbitrary firings of civil servants, mistreatment of Liberian diplomats stationed during the CDC administration, and numerous other infractions.”

CDC Chairman explained, “We are all aware that political parties have limited control over their members elected to the National Legislature under Liberian democratic practices, as suspensions or expulsions have no bearing on their seat at the National Legislature.”

He however call for a national discussion on enhancing political parties’ authority over their elected representatives in the National Legislature, and added that the CDC will think about its next course of action.

Chairman Kowo urged all CDC partisans to maintain composure as the party, in conjunction with stakeholders, decides on its future course of action.
