Monrovia, Liberia – Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia, Sie-N-Yuoh has threatened to halt the budget law in the event that the 55th Legislature is unable to provide an explanation for the government’s continued underfunding of the judiciary branch.

Chief Justice Yuoh stated that the judiciary is a branch of government and not an executive branch division that should be questioned about its budget. She made the statement on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the ongoing International Conference of Judges organized by the National Association of Trial Judges of Liberia.

As a separate part of government, the judiciary is not required to defend its budget, like the executive and the legislature, Justice Yuoh added.

She claimed that the Judiciary does not need seek charity because every dollar or penny provided to it is mandated by law, noting that the chief justice’s remuneration must commensurate with that of the republic’s vice president.

Chief Justice Sie-N-Yuoh insisted that the judiciary has the authority to stop the budget bill if it is not informed as to why it is receiving lower amounts.
