Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberian government’s payment of US$300–400 per month to skilled engineers at the ministry is described by Prince Tamba, the deputy minister designate for technical services and public works, as a complete betrayal, a joke, and an intolerable act.

Mr. Tamba emphasized that Liberia has skilled and qualified civil engineers working at the Ministry without incentive as he addressed the Senate Committee on Public Works and Rural Development on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at his confirmation hearing up Capitol Hill.

The Deputy Public Works Minister for Technical Services designate emphasized that although engineers receive low pay, the public and federal government still depend on them to manage road projects more effectively. She listed this as just one of the many difficulties faced by professionals working for the government.

In his view, professionals who sacrifice their time and effort to maintain or repair roads are frequently viewed with disdain, suggesting that even the basic equipment required to do tasks in the nation is unavailable to laborers.

According to Mr. Tamba, the fact that the engineers are forced to beg the contractors for petrol due to a shortage of fuel and the government officials’ lack of drive in Liberia is blatant evidence of corruption or compromise.

Following ratification by the Liberian Senate, the Deputy Public Works Minister for Technical Services designated stated that the Senior Management Team is committed to inspiring those engineers and treating them with appropriate deference so they can carry out their professional engineering duties.
