As the procession left Wellington Arch in the heart of London for Windsor, a historic town home to one of the royal homes, Windsor Castle, thousands of people lined the streets and showered flowers at the moving car. Windsor is just 26 miles (42 kilometers) from London. Senior royals like King Charles III, the Queen Consort, and others also drove including world leaders and Commonwealth nations.

Westminster Abbey, a Gothic abbey in the heart of London where the Queen was crowned in 1953, hosted the funeral service. In the funeral procession, more than a mile long that included thousands of British military personnel, her casket traveled through Central London.

The funeral procession marched by the Palace of Westminster on its way to Wellington Arch, but despite the crowds and the jam-packed streets, the atmosphere was mainly calm. Thousands of people squeezed past one another to view the parade and fully participated in the church service as they monitor the funeral service on giant screens and mobile phones among others.

Ten earlier monarchs, including her father and husband, are buried in Windsor Castle’s late-medieval St. George’s Chapel, where Queen Elizabeth is being laid to rest.
