Monrovia, Liberia – A financial agreement worth 20.9 million has been reached between the European Union and the Liberian government to support sustainable development and empower women.

On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, the European Union and the Liberian government signed the Spotlight Initiative and Support Measures finance deal. In order to optimize the impact and efficacy of the EU-Liberia development cooperation capacity building and civil society engagement, this seeks to improve national assistance development coordination and processes.

With the goal to improve social cohesiveness, public discourse, and government oversight, this component focuses on NGOs and civil society organizations (CSOs), and improve assistance coordination to guarantee that EU-sponsored development initiatives in Liberia are more effective and have a bigger impact.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Minister of Finance and Development Planning, stated that the program focused on demonstrating measurable outcomes and increasing the visibility and accountability of Liberia-EU collaboration.

The Initiative will focus on social norms and economic empowerment, CSOs and women’s movements, institutions and data prevention, laws and policies, and service delivery, he said. The program is implemented by UN Women, UNFPA and UNDP. Bong, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount Grand Gedeh, Lofa, Maryland, Montserrado and Nimba will benefit from phrase one of the initiative.

The program aimed at the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls. The finance agreements were signed in Monrovia by Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Augustine Ngafuan, and Erica Gerretsen, Director for Human Development, Migration, Governance, and Peace, DG INTPA, European Commission.

The financing agreement underscores the EU’s continued commitment to fostering good governance, gender equality, and sustainable development in Liberia.
