Monrovia, Liberia – George Weah, the former president, praised football as his delight and vitality. He presented Manchester City player Rodri with the 2024 Ballon d’Or prize at the Parisian Théâtre du Châtelet. “Football is my life,” declared Mr. Weah with enthusiasm.

“I still play football because it makes me feel better after a long day at the office. When I go home, I watch my teams, who are Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, PSG, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid. I will always be linked to the game since it helped shape who I am.”

Prior to the award ceremony, Mr. Weah discussed the significance of delivering such a distinguished prize and encouraged players who make it to the Ballon d’Or stage to show their appreciation.

The 1995 Ballon d’Or winner, looking back on his incredible journey, recounted growing up in the difficult Monrovia neighborhood, where he didn’t initially dream of winning the award. With the help of mentors like Arsene Wenger, he only chased the prize when he was at the height of his career.

Known for his quickness and ability to score goals, the former AC Milan striker experienced civil unrest in his native country. He did, however, discuss how the Ballon d’Or was particularly important in promoting stability and peace in Liberia.

“I am a Ballon d’Or winner from a civil war-torn nation. The Ballon d’Or contributed to the calm in my country, and sports became my heaven. Liberia is currently enjoying the benefits of such peace.”

He highlighted the commitment he put into training, guaranteeing his position in the annals of Ballon d’Or winners, and attributed his achievement to a few inspirational coaches, such as Arsene Wenger, Fabio Capello, and Luis Fernandes.

A key player for both Manchester City and the Spanish national team, Rodri helped City win the Premier League for an unprecedented fourth time in a row and was instrumental in Spain’s victory at Euro 2024. He defeated Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid, who was favored after winning La Liga and the Champions League the previous season.

Real Madrid did not send a delegation on that historic night, even though Carlo Ancelotti, their manager, was named Men’s Coach of the Year. Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane of Bayern Munich shared the Gerd Müller Trophy, while Real Madrid was named Team of the Season.
