Monrovia, Liberia – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has supported the Liberian government’s partnership with the International Organization for Migration to supply food and non-food items to victims of human trafficking.
This program is in line with the ECOWAS Regional Policy on Protection and Support for West African Trafficking Victims.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, Nuho Kenneh, Acting Director of the Trafficking in Person Secretariat, explained that the government was able to provide the safe home with a variety of items, including rice, frozen meat, vegetable oil, bathing and washing soap, mattresses, pillows, and bedsheets, through to the assistance of ECOWAS and IOM.
Kenneh also underlined the government’s dedication to fighting human trafficking with strong collaboration through regional and global partners. “The government will make sure that victims receive support while they recover,” he said.
Additionally, he urged the Executive Director to make sure the items were used appropriately for the victims’ benefit.
Evangeline Sirleaf, the safe home’s executive director, thank the Liberian government, ECOWAS, and IOM for their assistance in aiding trafficking victims and other victims of sexual and gender-based violence after receiving all the supplies.
“All of the victims in the safe home will benefit from these items, not just those who have been trafficked,” she continued.
Tamba Siaffa, the IOM Trafficking in Person focal point, expressed gratitude to the government for its ongoing assistance and reaffirmed IOM’s dedication to working with the government and other relevant parties to combat human trafficking in Liberia.
He applauded ECOWAS for the initiative and for giving IOM the responsibility of managing the project grant.
