After Several Fight in the Borough of New Kru Town, Bushord Island.

Monrovia, Liberia – Following a weeklong period of violence, the densely populated Borough of New Kru Town, Bushord Island, a suburb of Monrovia, has finally experienced a complete restoration of peace and tranquility. The residents of the area have been resisting the appointment of Governor Robert B. Teah to lead the Municipality.

Governor Teah was sworn in on Friday, August 30, 2024, as a result of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ intervention. The Borough’s elders opposed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai after his appointment and abrupt confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

New Kru Town residents, notably the elders’ council, contended that Teah’s nomination contravenes the Borough Act. Two injuries, including those sustained by Liberian journalist Morris Wreletee, were the result of this tension.

The elders clarified that the Borough’s establishment Act grants them the authority to nominate a governor to the President for appointment; however, this was never done in the case of Governor Teah.

On Friday, Internal Affairs Minister Francis S. Nyumalin announced that the Borough has been restored to a state of tranquility following numerous consultative meetings with residents, including elders, who have agreed to permit peace to prevail.

“Governor Teah has been granted the authority to fulfill the duties assigned to him by the Liberian government, as evidenced by the Borough’s overwhelming positive response.”

Minister Nyumalin encouraged inhabitants to maintain a sense of tranquility, as peace is the sole solution to conflict and a prerequisite for progress. He emphasized the significance of unity and collaboration in the advancement of the borough, encouraging all parties to unite for the betterment of New Kru Town.

In his inaugural address, Governor Teah pledged to support the elder council in resolving conflicts in the best interest of the Borough and to advance the district by promoting development in New Kru Town.

“I can guarantee that New Kru Town will experience further growth as a result of the extensive work we have completed here. It is time for us to unite and advance our Borough. To you, my elders, be the glory of God. We will always support you in resolving conflict in the best interest of our Borough and restore all that you have lost over the years, I can assure you of this.”

Governor Teah requested budgetary support for New Kru Town to accelerate its development. He emphasized that the borough’s inclusion in the National Budget would expedite its progress.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Minister Nyumalin for restoring order in New Kru. I am confident that this Borough will progress to a new level under my supervision.”

Madam Comfort Toe, the Chairperson of the Six Nominating Districts, expressed her commitment to collaborating with Governor Teah to advance the Borough. She expressed her gratitude to Minister Nyumalin for his intervention, which not only helped to restore order in New Kru Town but also reinforced the elders’ dedication to maintaining harmony.
