Buchanan, Grand Bassa – Originally built to hold just 47 offenders, Buchanan Central Prison is currently struggling with extreme overcrowding, housing more than 145 inmates in its extremely small space. Both inmates and staff find it virtually hard to cope with the terrible living circumstances brought on by the overcrowding, which include intense heat and a strong, lingering stench.
It is reported that there is a severe water deficit at the facility. Due to the facility’s sole hand pump becoming dry, prisoners are unable to obtain clean water. The terrible situation is made worse by inadequate sanitation, which makes day-to-day living more and more unbearable.
The situation becomes worse by the absence of reliable medical emergency transportation. There are serious concerns regarding the safety and health of those in urgent need of medical attention because there is no means to transport ailing prisoners to a hospital without a functional vehicle, particularly at night.
The issue of the prison facilities around the country continue to worsen. At the Monrovia Central Prison, it is also reported that the inmates are facing similar difficulties including less meal per day.
