Monrovia, Liberia – In order to prevent a possible government shutdown in February, the House of Representatives has approved President Joseph Boakai’s request for authorization of US$41.3 million for immediate use.

The joint committee on Ways, Means, Finance, and Public Accounts and Expenditure, led by Rep. Dixon Seboe of District #16, Montserrado County, conducted a “thorough” review before reaching its judgment on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

In its evaluation of the President’s request, the committee underlined how critical it is to maintain government operations while the 2024 budget is being finalized and resubmitted. The President declared last week that government operations must continue to prevent a shutdown because the draft budget for the fiscal year 2024 was returned and is currently being finalized for resubmission.

After reviewing the report, the joint committee recommended that it be adopted and sent to the Senate for approval along with a resolution. Rep. Edward Flomo of District #13, Montserrado County made a motion during discussion that was approved by a majority vote of 38. Rep. Musa Hassan Bility (District #7, Nimba County) was one of the two who voted against the proposal, and two members abstained.
