Monrovia, Liberia – In an elegant celebration conducted at the Invincible Sports Park in Monrovia on Saturday, ArcelorMittal Liberia celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking an important milestone. A wide range of stakeholders were present at the event, including representatives from the government, local leaders, staff members, and foreign partners. They all came together to celebrate the company’s influence, dedication, and collaboration with Liberia’s investment and progress over the past 20 years.

Michiel Vandermerwe, CEO of AML, emphasized the company’s support of the local economy and dedication to sustainable mining methods in a special statement. “We, ArcelorMittal are steadfast in our dedication to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community development, ensuring that the benefits of the success of our operations are shared with all Liberians,” CEO Vandermerwe said.

“We are at a critical juncture of our operations this year, when we are finalizing our Phase II Expansion Project, one of the largest mining expansion projects in West Africa.”

The CEO emphasized a commitment by ArcelorMittal Executive Vice President and CEO for Mining, Kleber Silva, that 2025 is the year for Liberia, adding that the commitment was not just a statement. “This is a vision which we will make a reality this year.”

The Phase II Expansion Project, according to CEO Van Der Merwe, will significantly increase the company’s mining volume. The concentrator facility is expected to be put into service soon, making Liberia the hub of major mining in West Africa.

The occasion also highlighted the company’s accomplishments, which included the establishment of thousands of employment, large investments in regional infrastructure, such as the Yekepa-Buchanan railway, and environmental sustainability projects. Since the end of the civil war, ArcelorMittal Liberia has played a significant role in the nation’s economic recovery by generating steady employment and boosting the GDP.

“Since 2005, ArcelorMittal has invested over 3.5 billion U.S. dollars in this country. Most of this investment was spend on the reconstruction of the railway, upgrading the port and rehabilitation other mining infrastructures and the construction of the concentrator.”

ArcelorMittal was commended by government officials for its contribution to Liberia’s economic stability and progress. The company’s long-term dedication to the nation was acknowledged by the Minister of Mines and Energy.

Two of Liberia’s most well-known musicians, MC Caro and CIC, performed live as part of the anniversary event, highlighting the country’s rich cultural legacy and pledging the company’s future collaboration between the company and local artists.
