“THIS NONESENSE MUST STOP”
Monrovia, Liberia – The embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Fonati Koffa, has informed the legislators from the Majority Bloc who are trying to remove him that he has no plans to leave his job for any reason and that his resignation is a voluntary and elective act.
On Thursday, November 14, 2024, there were speculations that Speaker Koffa was going to retire because of pressure from the House of Representatives majority block.
Speaker Koffa stated those demanding his resignation should invest their time and resources in persuading the so-called majority group to go to work during a news conference on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Speaker Koffa stated that he will stick to Liberia’s Constitution because the House’s standing rules clearly state that 49 members are required to remove a speaker and 37 members are required to elect one.
“I will not be at my office for a day once you have 49 members. Certainly will pack my bags and depart, yet I won’t quit for the vicious avarice of any so-called majority block until it’s required under the constitution.”
Speaker Koffa stated that the absurdity in the House of Representatives must end because he will not be forced to step down, as was the case with past including Speakers Edwin Snowe, J. Alex Tyler and others.
Speaker Koffa claimed that certain members of that esteemed body have, for whatever reason, ruined the House of Representatives’ operations for their own gain. However, he added that such actions would cease as the law is the law.
