AS MAJORITY NUMBER INCREASES BY TWO
Monrovia, Liberia – The political power struggle of the House of Representatives grew more intense on Tuesday, November 19, when the majority bloc welcomed two new members into its fold and suspended three politicians for alleged wrongdoing.
The dominant caucus in the House of Representatives is still gaining strength, which is why these developments are occurring. The bloc now has 45 members after the official addition of two new members, Representatives Bernard Blue Benson of Montserrado County District #17 and Zinnah Norman of Gbarpolu County District #1. With this figure, the crucial 49-vote barrier required to remove House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa is getting closer.
In response to his defection, Representative Zinnah Norman downplayed claims of financial inducements and maintained that his choice was best for his people. “My employers the people I serve wanted this decision to be made, and bribes had no influence on it,” Norman said.
In order to further alter the balance of power in the chamber, there is a lot of speculation that Representative Frank Saah Foko of Montserrado County District #9 would also join the majority bloc.
