Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph N. Boakai has congratulated District #11 Representative Richard Nagbe Koon on his election as Speaker of the 55th Legislature and urged him to lead with courage, inclusiveness and humility.

Delivering his Unification Day message Wednesday, May 14, 2025, President Boakai called on Speaker Koon to reach across the aisle, unify the body, to and ensure that the House focuses squarely on the work for which the Liberian people elected its members.

“It is in this spirit of unity and renewal that I am pleased to acknowledge yesterday’s peaceful resolution of the leadership standoff in the lower House of our National Legislature with the election of Honorable Richard Nagbe Koon as Speaker of the House of Representatives,” he stated.

The Liberian leader also praised former Speaker Cllr. Fonati Koffa’s admirable action, calling it “significantly” that brought the regrettable deadlock to a more agreeable conclusion. He said the occasion is not just the conclusion of a long deadlock but also the start of a fresh chance to serve our people with urgency and honor.

President Boakai, “I sincerely thank all well-meaning Liberians—our elders, local officials, religious leaders, and regular citizens—who contributed their voices and knowledge to assist achieve this agreement. The essence of National Unification Day is embodied in such a strong dedication to peace, communication, and stability.”

The President also urged parliamentarians to get to work, stating that the Liberian people are watching, hoping, and deserve the best, and that the time for service is now.
