Monrovia- The Management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation along with officials of government, Development partners, and Community Leaders on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, officially Launched the “Anti Power Theft Campaign” in Monrovia. Power theft, according to the entity’s acting chief executive officer Monies R. Captan, is a significant cause of business losses.
He pointed out that the worrisome loss, which totals 46 million US dollars every month, posed a severe obstacle to the entity’s ability to deliver proper services to its many consumers around the nation. According to him, community power theft gravely jeopardizes the corporation’s capacity to sustain itself and expand Liberia’s existing grid networks.
The LEC boss stated that working with communities and being effective in the institution’s execution policy are the entity’s greatest strengths. He took the opportunity to inform the public that his organization recently signed a power purchase agreement with CI Energies of Cote d’Ivoire for 27 additional megawatts. According to the management, this agreement will help the community’s residents pay for electricity so that the agreement can continue to be sustainable.
According to Mr. Captan, the government of Liberia owes the government of Ivory Coast $12,000,000 in debt, and the Liberian government is obligated to pay off the debt in full before December 1, 2022. Recently, the number of LEC customers has risen to over 185,000, and an additional 41,000 customers are anticipated to soon receive adequate power, according to Mr. Captan.
“With the help of Developing partners, there is a plan to construct additional 20 megawatts at the Mount Cofee Hydropower plant to boost the sector.”
For the effectiveness of the Anti-Power Theft the LEC boss named Madam Mary Broh Co-Chair of the Anti-Power Theft Campaign.
