Monrovia, Liberia – Due to a lack of financial backing from the government, the participation of the Liberia Deaf Lone Star Football team in the upcoming West African Deaf Football Championship remains uncertain. The following competition will take place from July 6–18, 2023, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. However, according to the organizers, the registration of participating countries is scheduled to expire on June 30 of this month.

The West Africa Deaf Sports Union created the championship to promote health and unity among its member nations. In the last competition held in the Gambia, the team came in second and took home two individual prizes.

This will mark the third national team to have missed out on major international competitions in 2023 because of financial support, if they miss this tournament.

Prior to this, the Liberia Women’s Football team was disqualified from competing in the 2023 WAFU Nations Championship in Praia, Cape Verde Island. This was followed by a recent announcement from the Liberian FA that the men’s national team would not play any friendlies in June due to a lack of funding from the government.
