Paynesville – The Liberia Maritime Authority has been crowned champions of the 2023 edition of the Intra Governmental Tournament. The Intra-governmental Tournament is an annual sports event designed by the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports for public sector workers as means of fostering unity.
The commissioners finally broke their trophy drought on Friday, July 14, 2023, at the SKD Stadium in Paynesville by defeating Liberia Land Authority 2-0 in the grand final. The game was won by Hilary Sackie and Weah Doe, who both scored a goal in the second half.
In the first half, Liberia Land Authority showed a lot of promise as they generated numerous goal-scoring opportunities and controlled possession at all times.
They were, however, penalized for their missed opportunities in the first half. Even though they were defeated 2-0, the final was exciting to see as both teams displayed their superior skill. After the match’s conclusion, Maritime Commissioner General Ugene Nagbe, who led the side to victory, identified teamwork as the key element that contributed to their triumph.
“The real purpose of this competition is to have senior personnel from each entity meet with the least staff from the government. No one is superior to their friend, which is a concept that has been established over time, in my opinion. Everyone is valued at the Liberia Maritime Authority, and as a result, Commissioner Nagbe remarked, “we have continued to gain.”
The National Port Authority successfully defended its title after defeating Ministry of Mines and Energy. They defeated the Liberia Revenue Authority 2-1 to take third place in football as well.
In kickball, Ministry of Finance defeated John F. Kenndey Medical Center and took third place.
In the basketball version, National Social Security and Welfare Corporation defeated Ministry of State to win, and Ministry of Transport defeated National Port Authority to take third place.
On the other hand, Ministry of State won the volleyball portion after defeating NPA, although Liberia Revenue Authority took third place.
In the championship game, they defeated Liberia Electricity Corporation.
