Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s bid for re-election to the Council of IMO during elections at the 34th Assembly session of the Organization in December 2025 has been declared in the Official Note Verbale from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Liberia, which was submitted by Liberia through the Permanent Mission to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Leading a three-person team, Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO, Ambassador Robert Wilmot Kpadeh, delivered the document to the Legal Department at the IMO Headquarters in London today, Monday, December 16, 2024, at 12:15 p.m.
The importance of the deposit was emphasized by Ambassador Kpadeh, who said that it formally begins Liberia’s aggressive campaign to be re-elected to Category-A of the IMO 40-member Council, which it was elected to the 33rd Assembly session in 2023.
According to him, by using this tool, the Liberian government is emphasizing the country’s significant contribution to the IMO’s budget and its role as a founding member. In addition to taking satisfaction in having the most prestigious and coveted flag-ship registry, he said, Liberia continues to show leadership in all facets of international shipping.
While sponsoring or co-sponsoring significant proposals to ensure the safety and security of international shipping, he highlighted that Liberia is extremely proud to be chairing the crucial Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) at the IMO level, which is led by Dr. Harry Conway, Liberia’s Alternate Permanente Representative. According to him, Liberia maintained that it is entitled to keep its place on the IMO Council.
Relatedly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a public notice urging all foreign missions, line ministries, and government agencies in Liberia to back the nation’s re-election to the IMO Council, stating that it is a matter of pride and national duty that calls for everyone’s cooperation.
