Says Deputy Minister Dr. Ibrahim Nyei

Monrovia, Liberia – The United Nations Security Council Non-Permanent (UNSC) seat campaign for Liberia, according to Dr. Ibrahim Nyei, Deputy Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration, is on an irreversible and inescapable road.

Dr. Nyei expressed optimism that Liberia will win the desired non-permanent seat when elections are held in June 2025 at the UN Headquarters in New York at a routine press conference at the Ministry of Information on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

Dr. Nyie emphasized that recent media reports implying that Somalia had won the bid instead of Liberia were false and wrong.

He clarified that while Liberia is running for the 2026–2027 period, Somalia has won the seat for the 2025–2026 term. “Not the 2025–2026 seat, but the 2026–2027 seat is what we are running for. Dr. Nyei declared, “We are winning this seat, and we are fully prepared.”

Dr. Nyei also revealed that the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have formally approved Liberia’s candidacy. He stated that Liberia’s rising prominence as a leader in Africa and the world is demonstrated by this strong regional backing. “We are honored to have the AU’s and ECOWAS’s complete support.

This support shows how much our regional organizations believe Liberia can make a significant contribution to global peace and security,” Dr. Nyei stated. At the UN, where there are 193 members, Liberia will require about 128 votes to win a non-permanent seat on the Security Council.

Dr. Nyei was upbeat about reaching this goal and emphasized that Liberia’s diplomatic initiatives are concentrated on forging solid alliances and winning over other members of the group. He declared, “We are in a great position, and our diplomatic engagements have been producing positive results.”

Apart from pursuing its candidature for the UNSC Non-Permanent seat, Liberia is proactively aiming to enhance its presence in other UN bodies. It was disclosed by Dr. Nyei that the administration is running candidates for important posts in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and other specialized institutions. In addition to securing a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, our goal is to increase Liberia’s involvement and influence in a number of UN bodies. We’re committed to be more involved in developing international policies that support our local and national goals,” he continued.

Also, Dr. Nyei used the occasion to draw attention to the accomplishments of the Liberian delegation during the just-completed 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
During the Assembly, he underlined the importance of Liberia’s connections with major international partners and multilateral organizations, pointing out that these exchanges have strengthened Liberia’s position internationally and its bid for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC.

“Our delegation made tremendous progress at the UNGA. We had fruitful discussions with our counterparts from different regions, and we received assurances of support for our candidacy. Liberia’s voice is being heard loud and clear on the international stage,” Dr. Nyei remarked.

He emphasized Liberia’s dedication to the UN’s fundamental ideals, which include advancing global security, peace, and sustainable development.

Dr. Nyei emphasized that Liberia’s determination to support international efforts to solve urgent issues including conflict resolution, climate change, and human rights is the foundation of its push for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC.

Dr. Nyei gave the public assurance that the government will uphold openness and keep the country updated on the status of its diplomatic efforts as Liberia campaigns for the Non-Permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2026–2027.

He urged every Liberian to come together in support of this vital national endeavor, emphasizing that obtaining the UNSC non-permanent seat would be a historic accomplishment and a source of pride for all of the nation’s residents.

“We are on an irreversible course, and we are confident that Liberia will emerge victorious. This campaign is not just about the government; it is about the people of Liberia, and we will continue to work hard to secure this victory.”
