Monrovia- A shipment of machine guns was reportedly intercepted by the Joint State Security and the Liberia National Police at the Monrovia Freeport. Patrick Sudue, the Inspector General of the LNP, claims that state security seized at least 450 different firearms and rounds of ammunition from the consignment.
At a press conference held on January 5, 2023, at the Liberian National Police Headquarters in Monrovia, the police inspector general (IG) announced that state security had been able to seize the container containing the first batch of weapons from the port. The container is now in the possession of the LNP, and as part of their ongoing investigation, they will open it and display every item inside.
However, the Police IG informed the public that the LNP had been successful in apprehending two persons in connection with the aminations. Melvina Pyne, a customs broker, and Barbara Debah, a resident of the Old Road Community, were named as direct recipients of the amination from Bob Benjamin Baker, a Liberian American who, according to police IG, works for an airline in the United States of America and lives in Taxes USA while shipping the gums to Liberia. However, the police IG refused to reveal the identity of the airline while adamantly stating that a thorough inquiry would be conducted and the findings would be made public.
Despite the fact that the weapons are long-range guns, the police said the ammo is of high grade and can be used by military personnel. Meanwhile, the Liberian National Police and joint security asked the populace not to worry, reiterating that state security was in place and assuring Liberians of their safety, especially a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent election process in 2023.
