Monrovia, Liberia – The People Democratic Party of Liberia (LPDP) has denounced what seems to be a retrogressive trend in the democratic march that is quickly establishing itself in state governance under the Unity Party-led government in power.
In an interview with reporters on Friday, August 16, 2024 in Monrovia, LPDP National Chairperson D. Wa Hne, Jr. said that inclination had the potential to plunge the nation into uncontrollable turmoil to the point where it would severely disrupt daily operations across the board if unchecked and unhalted.
He believes that President Boakai must awaken and take decisive action to stop the issue. “The infringement on fundamental rights to free speech which was upheld by former Presidents Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and George Manneh Weah seems to be a new dimension added to the Rescue Mission package for Liberians by some state actors. This is because Liberians, especially political and civic organizations, are yet to comprehend the shocking wave of missteps in policy decisions and encroachments on the Rule of Law.”
Hne stated that the LPDP believes that the firing of nine (9) civil servants at the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) for no other reason than their openly expressed disagreement with the way the nation is run by the Unity Party led government is unconstitutional and wrong, and that it never should have been considered in the first place.
“The CSA boss’s intentional and illegal action to deny certain Liberians their constitutional rights under Article 18 of the 1986 Constitution by favoring people solely on the basis of partisanship, rather than on the basis of merit, has left the LPDP believing that well-meaning Liberians throughout the country are disappointed and grieving.”
If it was wrong yesterday, it is also wrong today, stated the national chairperson of the LPDP, adding that it is intolerable and harmful to the developing democracy and the harmonious coexistence of sociopolitical differences.
He urged President Boakai to seize the situation immediately and bring back the government workers who were wrongly fired for allegedly criticizing him and his officers, as several Executive agents have said.
Chairman Hne further stated that the directives from Josiah Joekai, the CSA Director General, are excessive and may be seen as an anti-democratic stance that labels him as intolerant of differing opinions.
In light of the aforementioned issues, the LPDP wishes to urge the Legislature to set aside political differences and preserve the state by carrying out their oversight duty as stipulated in the 1986 Constitution, thereby safeguarding and preserving the Republic’s Constitution.
