Monrovia, Liberia – As the first Lone Star Coach to go four games without a loss in almost two decades, Mario Marinica has started authoring his own chapter in the history of Liberia soccer.

On Sunday, June 9, 2024, many Liberians praised the British-Romanian tactician after Lone Star’s 1-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which are scheduled to take place in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The Liberians characterized the outcome as overpowering and noted that, following a trying time under Ansu Keita, who led the squad for nine games without a victory, they now have a coach who is doing exactly what has been lacking and should be highly praised.

Coach Mario Marinica has won two of his team’s four games, but his accomplishment is even more impressive considering that he has won three of them away from home.

In four games: two victories and two draws for Liberia; two wins and two draws for the team on the road; and one draw for the home team.

Liberia met Djibouti at home and away in the preliminary qualifiers for the 2025 Nations Cup; they won 2-0 and drew 0-0 at home. Under Mario Marinica, Liberia has participated in two FIFA World Cup qualifiers: on Sunday, June 9, they defeated Sao Tome and Principe 1-0, and on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, they drew with Namibia 1-1.

Based on his recent performance, Coach Mario Marinica has established himself as Liberia’s best hire since the conclusion of the George Weah Eleven period.

Even though there are still many games to be played in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, many Liberians have begun to speculate that, given the team’s early performance, the Lone Star will have success going forward.
