Monrovia, Liberia – Waste management is a national emergency that needs to be addressed with a purposeful team effort, according to John C. Siafa, the City Mayor designate of Monrovia.
Speaking at his confirmation hearing in the Liberian Senate on Friday, February 26, 2024, John Siafa urged the Legislature to include additional funding for MCC’s findings in order to contribute to Monrovia’s transformation into a greener and healthier community for its residents.
“Financial sustainability remains a key challenge for the city especially for the collection of solid waste.”
The request for more financial assistance is made at a crucial moment when Monrovia is juggling conflicting goals and scarce resources.
The Mayor Designate raised the alarm about overflowing trash cans, congested drainage systems, and growing environmental problems. She emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action, particularly financially motivated attempts to address the issues.
The MCC boss-designate stated in his presentation that the organization still has the financial resources to tax and does not have sufficient, consistent, or timely municipal income sources to fully support itself, much less the Solid Waste Management activities.
The MCC boss-designate told the Senate’s Internal Affairs Committee on Friday that, if confirmed as mayor, the main objective of the City Government Team will be to enhance the infrastructure and quality of life for city dwellers by creating and executing a number of urgently needed, results-driven initiatives.
The Mayor-designate praised the World Bank, the EU, and other donors for their ongoing assistance to the industry, emphasizing that the industry is now unsustainable without more funding from the federal government.
