Monrovia, Liberia – Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Liberia Minister of Finance and Development P lanning underline the significant contribution the United States makes to Liberia’s development, , during a courtesy meeting with U.S. Ambassador Mark Toner Monday, September 23, 2024, at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) in Central Monrovia.

“The story of Liberia can not be told without dedicated chapters to the United States Government, whose continuous support has been vital to our development,” Minister Ngafuan said. Along with support during the Ebola epidemic, he recognized the U.S. contributions in efforts in peace restoration, debt waiver for Liberia, and $257 million under the Millennium Challenge Corporation for the Mount Coffee hydroelectric project renovation.

“America has always stood by our side as a strong partner in progress. We are grateful for your support and remain committed to working together. As Minister, I aspire to be a trustworthy strategic partner for the U.S. government, ensuring accountability in our collaboration,” Minister Ngafuan said.

Minister Ngafuan underlined the need of carrying out concrete initiatives that would directly affect the daily life of common Liberians. “We are currently developing a new national development plan and budget; it is imperative that these match to properly address the needs of our country.”

Ambassador Toner responded by underlining the U.S. as Liberia’s main bilateral partner and remembering the great help given to the nation during its 2003 recovery. He praised Liberia for its effective democratic procedures, including two most recent presidential elections, which he considered as a historic accomplishment in West Africa.

Ambassador Toner stated, “The United States remains committed to building a strong and strategic relationship with Liberia as we support its development efforts.”

Attending the meeting were USAID Acting Director, Economic and Political Affairs Counsellor, and Ministry of Finance and Development Planning Senior Management team members.
