CALLS ON NATIONAL GOVERNMENT TO INCLUDE STATOTORY YOUTH ORGANOZATIONS IN WAR ON DRUGS
Monrovia, Liberia – In a seven-count resolution for 2024, the Mano River Youth Parliament Liberia Chapter has called on the national government of Liberia to include statutory youth groups in the national campaign against drug and substance addiction.
During its Third Parliamentary Session, which took place on Saturday, March 23, 2024, in Central Monrovia, 16 of the 30 members of the MRUP-LC, lawfully seated, passed a resolution outlining significant recommendations to the Unity Party Government.
The phrase “Ending the Scourge of Drug and Substance Abuse through Dialogue and Youth Engagement” perfectly encapsulated the theme.
The group urges the central government, through the taskforce on drugs and substance abuse headed by President Joseph Boakai, to guarantee the participation of all statutory youths and student organizations. Daniel Nills, the Speaker of the Regional Youth Council, read the resolution.
As per Mr. Nills, the purpose of involving young people is to enable them to raise awareness about drug and substance addiction prevention, as well as to monitor and report the importation and sale of these substances through a whistle-blowing method.
The National Drugs Law should be enforced countrywide, and a court should be quickly established to prosecute those who commit the horrible, potentially fatal act of importing and selling drugs. This is what the MRUYP Liberia Chapter encouraged the government to do.
President Boakai has proclaimed drug and substance use a national emergency. During his administration, former President George Weah also launched an initiative to combat drug abuse, particularly among young people.
The youth and young people are hardly affected and are causing serious risks to society. Young people can be seen in the street corners of Monrovia and on some important streets with said attitude. President Boakai has called on the Liberian populace to join in the fight against drugs.
