Gets New Environment, Climate Change Department.
Monrovia, Liberia – The Acting Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), Mr. J. Cyrus Saygbe, has announced a series of significant developments aimed at strengthening Liberia’s fisheries governance and institutional capacity.
Mr. Saygbe said the Liberian Fisheries Authority’s Board of Directors has formally authorized the creation and operation of a new Environment and Climate Change Department during the weekend’s June 2025 Monthly Staff Meeting.
Mr. S. Ahmed Sherf, former Director for Technical Services, will lead the department, which underscores NaFAA’s dedication to tackling environmental sustainability and the effects of climate change on maritime resources.
Acting Director General Saygbe said, “This new department is a significant step in coordinating NaFAA’s work with national and international priorities for marine conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable fisheries management.”
Mr. Saygbe announced the establishment of the new department and the upcoming operationalization of NaFAA’s Southeast Station in Harper City, Maryland County, with full operations anticipated to start in November 2025.
He emphasized the close collaboration between Liberia and its development partners in promoting the blue economy by pointing out that the World Bank is funding the refurbishment of the Harper City regional office under the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project (LSMFP).
By 2026, NaFAA employees will start signing performance contracts, Mr. Saygbe added, as part of the Authority’s attempts to improve accountability and performance. Employee performance is essential to the growth and advancement of Liberia’s fishing industry, he added.
“It is crucial that we all align our efforts with NaFAA’s strategic goals,” he emphasized.
