Ashmun Street, Monrovia – The National Orator on this year’s Independence Day expressed surprise at how little progress the country has made relative to its peers despite having been a nation for 176 years. Liberia is the oldest African country, having been established in 1847, but it is still unable to maintain a modern lifestyle.

Liberia’s fifteen-year civil war and subsequent instability have made it one of Africa’s least developed nations.

The leader of Liberia’s Chiefs and Elders Council accused the Americo Liberians of not upholding the principles of good governance, but they brought with them when they immigrated to Liberia from the western world.

The underdevelopment of Liberia, he claimed, was caused by previous governments’ poor leadership, and he accused the country’s minority elite of excluding its native population.

To allow politicians to visit more traditional areas, Chief Zoe has decreed a moratorium on all traditional practices until the conclusion of the 2023 presidential and legislative elections.

All candidates around the nation, particularly female candidates, will be allowed to run on an equal footing thanks to the prohibition.
