Monrovia, Liberia – The National Elections Commission has ordered all candidates engaged in pre-campaigning to take down or destroy all of their billboards, posters, banners, jingles, and other party-promotional materials by midnight on May 15, 2023. NEC Chairperson David-Etta Brown-Lansanah revealed that as of May 5, 2023, the commission has started documenting any violations of campaign regulations.
Madam Lansanah gave the mandate to the aspirant at the regular bimonthly biometric voter registration briefing held in Monrovia on Monday. According to her, the commission will be unwavering in enforcing the 2023 revised and published guideline on campaigning and warned all aspirants to desist in order to avoid embarrassment. She warned that failure to comply with the mandate will eventually lead to consequences of candidate nomination which runs from the June 14 to July 14, 2023.
The commission also confirmed its intention to start enforcing the need for a minimum of 30% female participation on the list of parties, alliances, collaborations, or coalitions at the Inter Party Coordination Committee meeting held in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. Political parties have agreed to impose a 30 percent gender quota for candidates listed for the elections in 2023, according to a news release issued by the Inter Party Consultative Committee and the National Elections Commission. The UN Women Liberia office provided funding for the summit, which took place from May 5 to 6, 2023, and was organized by NEC.
