Senators Jeremiah Kpan-Koung and Prince Y. Johnson of Nimba County have expressed uncertainty over whether they will back President George Weah’s candidacy for a second term in the 2023 presidential and general elections. The Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), led by Senator Johnson, was essential in ensuring President Weah’s win in the 2017 runoff election.

Senator Koung and Sen. Johnson expressed their displeasure with the treatment Nimbaians are receiving from the CDC-led administration on Voice of Gompa over the weekend, noting that they supported President Weah but the narrative could change depending on the result of the negotiation on behalf of the people of Nimba.

Senator Kohn asserts that Nimbaians are dissatisfied with the fact that the President’s native South Easterners have been nominated to the majority of positions in government and that, over the course of the Weah administration’s five years, Nimbaians have been denied opportunities, including appointed top positions in the CDC-led Government.
