Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph N. Boakai has reiterated his administration’s steadfast dedication to giving the Port of Buchanan’s infrastructure development first priority, characterizing the port as essential to the country’s economic transformation.
The President made the declaration on Saturday, April 5, 2025, while touring the port’s facilities in Grand Bassa. According to him, the government now values the Port of Buchanan more than it has in the past.
According to the Liberian leader, the country’s ports are its economic entry point, and their growth and efficiency are critical to its economic survival. President Boakai informed reporters that he had initially planned to visit Senate President Pro Tempore Hon. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence’s father in Buchanan, but also used the opportunity to visit the Port at the Senate President’s request.
Jonathan Lambort Kaipay, the Port of Buchanan’s Director, thanked the President for the historic visit and gave him an update on current issues, such as the decaying breakwater, which still presents significant operating concerns.
He mentioned that the NPA is working with strategic technical partners to conduct a thorough evaluation that would include the Port of Buchanan’s long-term growth, expansion, and coastal security.
The President’s visit, according to Hon. James R. Bernard, Deputy Managing Director for Administration at the NPA, demonstrated the government’s commitment to enhancing port infrastructure as a driver of economic expansion and national advancement.
Barnard thanked the President for his ongoing leadership and support and reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to turning Liberia’s ports into top entry gateways for investment and commerce.
The Freeport of Monrovia, the Port of Buchanan, and the Port of Greenville are now better visible and safer for staff and docking boats as a result of the installation of new lighting infrastructure.
The National Port Authority has raised its security profile to worldwide levels in the Ports of Buchanan and the Freeport of Monrovia in recent months by successfully meeting the U.S. Coast Guard’s worldwide Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) compliance criteria.
