IN SIERRA LEONE JUNE 24, 2023 GENERAL ELECTION

Free Town, Sierra Leone – According to reports from Sierra Leone, the All People’s Congress (APC) candidate Samura Kamara is now in second place with 42% of the vote after the votes from 60% of the voting places had been counted by the electoral commission.

The incumbent, Julius Maada Bio, has a 56% share of the vote. A contender must receive more votes than 55% of the total cast in order to win the first round.

According to the BBC, the main opposition party headed by Samura Kamara has termed the Early results from Sierra Leone’s presidential election as “daylight robbery.”

He alleged that the ballot counting was not verified by his election agents. It is reported that Mr. Bio formed a number of tactical electoral partnerships during the campaign, particularly in opposition strongholds, which are probably what contributed to his win.

However, the election commission has come under fire from European Union observers for being opaque, and violence was reported during the voting on Saturday in some areas. The APC had previously voiced displeasure with the way the poll was handled and the electoral commission.

Mr. Kamara said that his party’s headquarters had been shot at with live fire during a news conference on Sunday, June 25, 2023, the BBC reported.
