Urges Liberians and Foreigners to Join in Observance.
RELEASE
Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has proclaimed Friday, June 20, 2025, as “World Refugee Day” and has mandated that it be recognized as a working holiday across the Republic. According to a Foreign Ministry release, the official Celebration of the World Refugee Day 2025 in Liberia will be celebrated in Monrovia as well as in the refugee-concentrated counties across the country under the theme: “Community as a Superpower”, and it seeks to encourage and support community solidarity with refugees through engagements, fight against discrimination. Exercise understanding, and treat refugees with dignity.
In order to commemorate the Day, the Proclamation encourages all citizens and foreign residents, as well as national and international youth groups and government agencies involved, to work with the Liberia Refugees Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) to implement suitable programs.
According to the Foreign Ministry statement, the Government of the Republic of Liberia has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugees in accordance with the 1951 Geneva Convention relating to the status of refugees and as a founding member of the United Nations.
The Proclamation said, “With the range of programs, over 100 countries host events with the cooperation of governments, humanitarian aid workers, celebrities, and civilians as well as with IDPs and refugees themselves.”
It further stated that World Refugee Day provides a forum for promoting solidarity with refugees and increasing awareness through radio programs and social media, which will allow UNHCR to spread knowledge about the various long-term solutions, particularly local integration and voluntary repatriation.
World Refugees Day is especially observed to recognize the challenges encountered by both internally displaced people (IDP) who stay in their nations and refugees who go across international borders.
In honor of the bravery and tenacity of over 50 million people worldwide who have been compelled to flee their homes due to conflicts or human rights abuses, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Regulation 55/76, designating June 20 of each year as World Refugee Day to be observed by Member States.
