APPOINTS AMBASSADOR Dr. AL-HASSAN CONTEH AS ACTING PRESIDENT

Monrovia, Liberia – Dr. Julius J.S. Nelson has been removed from his role as President of the University of Liberia, effective immediately, by President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr.

In his capacity as the university’s visitor, President Boakai made this decision after holding multiple discussions with the board of trustees and other university stakeholders.

Concerns about how the university is managed have been voiced by the public and student body on numerous occasions. The Student Unification Party (SUP) recently staged a number of protests in support of the school’s reopening.

Since August of last year, the UL has been unable to operate a year-round academic program, which the general public views as a dishonor to the public domain.

In order to solve the problem, President Boakai held series of meeting with the Faculty Association, the university board and members of the House of Legislature. After the meetings and consultations, President Boakai has relieve Dr. Nelson of his position as president of the state run university, UL.

Ambassador Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, a former president of the University of Liberia, has been named by the President to serve as Acting President and head the Interim Management Team. Dr. Conteh was unanimously nominated by the Board to lead the search for a new university president within a three-month period according to the Executive Mansion.
To guarantee the seamless running of the University, the Interim Management Team will also carry out the required reforms and put the President’s action into practice.
