Monrovia, Liberia – The Executive Mansion announcement of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s two-day travel to Accra, Ghana, has drawn harsh social media criticism. A news announcement on the Executive Mansion’s official Facebook page revealed that the purpose of the trip is to meet with President-elect John Dramani Mahama and outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana. The disclosure that President Boakai will also be attending the wedding of a “longstanding friend’s daughter” during his visit, however, has caused a great deal of popular outrage.

“During his visit, the President will honor an invitation to attend the wedding ceremony of the Daughter of a longstanding friend,” the press release said. Many Liberians criticized the President’s goals and expressed grief and anger.

Facebook users were not holding back when they expressed their displeasure, with many wondering why the trip was necessary at a time when the nation is facing serious difficulties. Others voiced more serious worries about the financial ramifications and the President’s use of public funds for what they believe to be a diplomatic ruse to further his personal agenda.

Although several remarks wished the president a safe journey, they were also filled with criticism of the administration’s policies and laughter. His activities have been compared to those of his predecessor, George Weah, by critics, who wonder if the so-called “rescue mission” objective is actually making a difference for regular Liberians.

It is anticipated that on December 30, 2024, the President would return to Monrovia. The Unity Party government under President Joseph Boakai have received many criticism especially coming from the government communication arm and the Executive Mansion.
