128th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF FORMER PRESIDENT TUBMAN

Monrovia, Liberia – President George Manneh Weah has by Proclamation declared Wednesday, November 29, 2023 as the 128th Birth Anniversary of the late William V.S. Tubman, the 18TH President of the Republic of Liberia, and is to be observed throughout the Republic as a National Holiday. The Proclamation stipulated that on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, from six o’clock ante meridian to six o’clock post meridian, all government ministries and agencies, businesses, and marketplaces must close.

The observance honours President Tubman’s significant and fruitful contributions to Liberia, including his Open Door Policy, the Integration Policy, and the granting of women’s suffrage in the country, among many other policies and initiatives related to socio-economic development. Of particular note is his role in the emancipation of African colonial territories into statehood. This information was released by the Foreign Ministry.

Through a petition asking the National Legislature of Liberia to enact a law honouring his birth for posterity, the people of Liberia expressed their deep appreciation and approval for his outstanding, noble, and remarkable leadership. As a result, the Day is observed in recognition of the many contributions, profound changes, and lasting accomplishments made by former President Tubman during his administration.

In accordance with the wishes of the Liberian people, the 42ND National Legislature of the Republic of Liberia passed a law during its third session designating November 29 of every year as the National Holiday in honour of the late President William Vacanarat Shadrach Tubman.
