Capitol Hill, Monrovia, RELEASE – By proclamation, President George Manneh Weah has designated Tuesday, October 24, 2023, as United Nations Day, which is to be commemorated as a working holiday throughout the Republic. An announcement from the Foreign Ministry states that the purpose of the observance is to honor the invaluable contributions that the UN has made to Liberia.
The Proclamation requests that all government departments and agencies, foreign organizations, United Nations agencies in the vicinity of Monrovia, educational institutions, and the general public work with the Ministry of Education to plan events that are appropriate for the occasion.
The proclamation is in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution (168(II)) passed on October 31, 1947, which established October 24 as United Nations Day, calling on Member States to collaborate with the UN in commemorating the day. The resolution also declared October 24 to be the anniversary of the UN Charter.
Resolution 2782, which suggested that Member States commemorate United Nations Day as an international holiday, was further modified by the UN General Assembly.
According to the Presidential Proclamation, Liberia will join other Member States to celebrate the 76th anniversary of United Nations Day under the theme “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity”.
The Declarative praised the United Nations and its member states for their contributions to Liberia’s reconstruction after its civil war, for which the nation is still immensely appreciative. As a signatory to the august body’s charter and a founding member, Liberia meaningfully benefits from its work and continues to support all of the organization’s programmes as a token of its ongoing gratitude, the Proclamation states, emphasising the work of the UN Mission in Liberia in particular.
