Monrovia, Liberia – 30 members of the Gbarnga community, including its 19 zonal heads, the Citizen Action Committee (CAC), and leaders in the fields of religion, youth, and women, participated in a two day working session with the Rural Human Rights Activists Program (RHRAP).
The purpose of the working sessions was to involve community members who are entitled to participate in evaluating the justice sectors by drawing on their experiences with the police, courts, prisons, and other justice sectors, according to an RPRAP statement dated October 29, 2024.
Another goal of the project, which had as its topic “Promoting Accountability in the Justice sector to Enhance Democratization in Liberia,” was to help advance accountability at all levels of the country’s judicial system.
RPRAP release stated that the two years intervention funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) will access the various sectors of Liberia’s justice system including engaging the executive, the judiciary, and the national legislature.
In addition, the intervention is involving community members, primarily in rural areas, in identifying different problems that impact the administration of justice while simultaneously giving them the tools to increase their capacity to hold justice providers accountable through the proper channels and techniques at their disposal.
However, RHRAP and other interested CSOs, together with foreign partners, will use the assessment results to build genuine interventions that aim to address the recommendations of the assessment by including the relevant sectors as mentioned.
With more than 25 years of experience, RHRAP is a national human rights organization that works to protect and advance basic human rights, justice, and democratic ideals at the local and national levels.
RHRAP engages in grassroots engagement with community members in six counties Bong, Lofa, Nimba, Margibi, Grand Cape Mount, and Montserrado on a range of topics pertaining to human rights, peace, and democratic government through advocacy, education, and awareness-raising.
