Monrovia, Liberia – The management of the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency and Development partners on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, officially Launched the Liberia Solar Home System in Monrovia. The project which is sponsored by the World Bank, GIZ, and the Netherlands aimed at providing stable and affordable electricity for the rural population in the country.
Deputy Executive Director of the organisation, Mr Stephen V. Potters, gave a summary of the event and said that his organisation is working to end the widespread lack of power in Liberia, which affects a large percentage of the country’s population. Potters added that RREA is building a 9.34 MHZ hydropower plan in Nimba with support from the African Development Bank (ADB), which includes six thousand four hundred additional populated areas in Nimba and Bong counties. The project is expected to be completed at the end of December 2023.
He announced that forty-two (42 million) million euros had been provided by the European Union for the building of a distraction facility in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. This facility will be used to divert electricity from the CLSG Sub-station to the outskirts of Buchanan, serving over ten thousand connections in the county.
“We intend to build a distribution facility in Greenville, Sinoe County with assistance from the European Union because we are aware that LEC will not be in Greenville very soon.We have already awarded the project to Haier, a contractor; Grand Bassa County is included in this.”
The goal of the project, according to the RREA Deputy Executive Director, is to supply energy to each of the nation’s fifteen political subdivisions.
In addition, he noted that the World Bank had contributed $130 million to the project and praised the private sector for its ongoing efforts to guarantee that the rural populace has access to power.
For his part, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Liberia, Dr. Jako Haselhuber pledged his country continuous commitment to Liberia’s development. Headded that the Government and people of Germany will continue to support Liberia in its quest to provide electricity to the people of Liberia.
