Boakai Describes Catholic Archbishop Appointment

Monrovia, Liberia – The appointment of His Grace Archbishop Gabriel Blamo Jubwe has been characterized by President Joseph N. Boakai as a profound acknowledgement of the Catholic Archbishop’s exceptional leadership and selfless service to the Church and the country.

The President said, Archbishop Jubwe’s appointment marks a historic and symbolic turning point in the country’s spiritual journey, during his address on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the Mass for the conferral of Pallium at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Broad Street.

“First and foremost, it is my privilege to convey to His Holiness Pope Francis, on behalf of the people of Liberia, our government’s and country’s sincere gratitude for the appointment of the Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Jubwe as the new Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia.”

President Boakai acknowledged that the Catholic Church has been a part of Liberia from the country’s founding and stated that the Church’s influence is not a recent development but rather an enduring legacy that predates the formation of the state.

The head of Liberia asserted that the Catholic Church has been a part of the nation for the entirety of its existence since the 1800s, even before its independence.

He said that the development and prosperity of the country had been greatly influenced by the Catholic Church.

President Boakai stated that the Catholic Church has made a substantial contribution to Liberia’s growth and that it has had a long-lasting effect on the country’s socioeconomic and cultural environments.

“The church has not only been forming our children’s minds through education and health care for citizens for decades, but it has also been an essential pillar of spiritual development, the leadership of the nation, and moral conscience.”

“We have a once in a generation opportunity to transform our country for good, which is why I have been engaging different stakeholders in our society to work together to advance a common agenda over the last few weeks.”

I would like to extend my congratulations to Archbishop Jubwe on his meritorious appointment. As he works in the Lord’s vineyard and oversees the archdiocese and church, may God bless and favor him, and may his tenure be full of wisdom and grace,” the President remarked.
