Monrovia, Liberia – Senator Momoh Cyrus of Lofa County, who is also the Liberian Senate’s Chair on Defense, Security, and Intelligence, has called for justice and the prompt arrest of those involved in the suspicious death of Yarkpawolo Moisema, a 19-year-old prisoner who passed away on January 6, 2025, while in the custody of the Voinjama Police Depot in Voinjama City, Lofa County.
The Lofa county legislator expressed thanks to the Ministry of Justice for carrying out an impartial and open autopsy, deeming the deceased’s death to be unnatural and calling for additional research to hold the accused perpetrator accountable.
Following the government’s release of the autopsy report, Senator Cyrus formally acknowledged the Ministry of Justice, saying that they are pleased with the progress they have made together so far in securing justice for the late Moisema and all others who perished in such a mysterious manner.
“This is what we requested. We demanded that the circumstances behind Mosemai’s death be explained in detail. In no little manner, we reiterated the family’s and the concerned citizens’ demand for a thorough autopsy. We are happy that the autopsy was carried out and that the results indicate an unnatural death. In order to administer justice and hold offenders accountable in line with our laws, an unbiased and prompt inquiry must come next,” the senator stated.
On Monday, the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Justice disclosed informed the public that an autopsy was requested in the suspicious death of 19–year-old Moisema.
The MoJ statement pointed out that as a result of that request, an autopsy was conducted on March 22, 2025 by the state pathologist, Dr. Benedict Kolee in the presence of family members of the late Moisema and members of various Law enforcement agencies at the Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital, Voinjama, Lofa County.
“The autopsy report has established that the cause of death is unnatural. In view of the above, the Ministry of Justice has launched an immediate investigation based on the findings of the autopsy report and will keep the public updated as the investigation progresses” the statement quoted.
Meanwhile, Senator Cyrus vowed that under his watch, there will be no business as usual, without “let’s leave our own to God” and “let’s just forget about it because we’re poor” as it’s usually done.
“Justice is for and must serve everyone, not some. Justice must serve blindly, regardless of who is involved. I want to thank the Liberia National Police – LNP, the Ministry of Justice – Liberia, the government of Liberia, local authorities of Lofa and citizens in general for their cooperation and support thus far.,” Senator Cyrus narrated.
