ANNOUNCES NEW CURFEW TIME
Freetown, Sierra Leone – What was referred to as an attempted coup in Sierra Lone is over. The nighttime curfew in Sierra Leone, which was enforced when armed men released prisoners, has been lifted. According to the communications minister of the West African country, detainees from several major prisons were released on Sunday morning, November 26, 2023.
According to Chernor A. Bah, Sierra Leone’s Head of Information, most of the attack’s leaders, according to President Julius Maada Bio, had been taken into custody. He called the incidents a “breach of security” and an assault on democracy in a speech that was broadcast on television. He was very careful not to refer to them as a coup attempt. He declared that all was well, but he did not elaborate on the identity or intentions of the offenders.
The communications ministry, led by Chernor A. Bah, announced that a new nine-hour night time curfew will take effect on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 9:00 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT).
In Sierra Leone, political tensions have persisted since President Bio’s reelection in June 2023, when he narrowly escaped the necessity of a runoff election. International observers have expressed concern about incidences of violence and intimidation, as well as a lack of openness in the country.
According to the Ministry of Information, an emergency curfew was imposed following the incident, and it was scheduled to end at 6:00 (GMT) on Monday, November 27, 2023. Flights to and from the country’s sole international airport have been cancelled, and residents were strongly advised to stay inside.
According to reports, soldiers in Freetown were observed chanting that they intended to clean up Sierra Leone on Sunday morning, November 27, 2023, while others were spotted transporting heavy weapons in a confiscated police car.
