Monrovia, Liberia – The United States of America Ambassador to Liberia Michael McCarthy has received the Mark Palmer Prize Award. The American ambassador is committed to upholding human rights, advancing democracy, and combating corruption in Liberia, according to Freedom House.

The Mark Palmer Prize honors diplomats and public employees who have taken courageous and innovative actions to advance democracy and human rights. It is named in memory of the late US ambassador, Freedom House trustee, and pioneer of foreign policy Mark Palmer.

On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, during their annual awards event, the prize was formally given to the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia. According to Freedom House, the award is granted to the US Ambassador in honor of his commitment to advancing democracy, human rights, and combating corruption in Liberia.

”Ambassador McCarthy has distinguished himself through his dedication to promoting a peaceful dialogue among diverse stakeholders in Liberia to advance a unified development agenda for the country after years of civil conflict. His team put the full force of the U.S. Government behind a coalition of domestic and international groups holding frequent meetings with the National Elections Commission, civil society organizations, the Press Union of Liberia, religious and traditional leaders, opposition parties, and the current government that helped to ensure the security and legitimacy of Liberia’s 2021 bi-elections.”
