Monrovia, Liberia – Under the Department of English, the University of Liberia (UL) has established a Language Center on Fendall Campus in Louisiana, Montserrado County. Launched on Thursday, September 19, 2024, the Language Center wich seeks to foster among others a learning environment for staff, professors, alumni, and other University community members.

Speaking at the center’s launch, Lead person of the institution, Dr. Kula Maria Thompson Williams said, the language center will coordinate seminars, workshops, and debates in addition to acting as an information hub for many academic fields and events.

She noted that the Center will enable teachers and students to learn the history, pick information and skills in indigenous signs and worldwide languages including Vai, Kpelle, French, Chinese, Swahili, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, and Hindi, among others.

Dr. Williams has also encouraged students to sign up for courses in the Language of Protest, Art and Advocacy, Censorship and Protest, meet Student Government, Dean’s and Colleges of the University of Liberia, and the Associations of UL.

Apart from other courses provided by the institution, Dr. Williams disclosed that academic languages and jargons spanning several fields are given special importance. She applauded the UL Management Team for the support to establish and launch the Center.

Dr. Williams gowned Dr. Josephus Moses Gray, the Dean of the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, for his creative output since he assumed office.

For her part, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Agnes Reeves Taylor, underscored the importance of languages to globalization. “One of the barriers to today’s globalization is the practice of languages.”

She related that the Learning Center will bring many people from different backgrounds together once it opens. Dr. Taylor described the launch of the Center as a significant achievement for the college and the UL in particular.

Speaking also, Prof. Dr. Josephus Moses Gray, the Dean of the Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, said the department’s creation of the Language Center is a noteworthy accomplishment. Dr. Gray praised the teachers of the department and Dr. Williams specifically for their achievement.
